House Plant

Areca palm (aka Chrysalidocarpus lutescens)

  • Location:

I am a species of flowering plant in the Arecaceae family, native to Madagascar and South India.
  • Looks:

I have multiple stems with long, arched leaves.
  • Height:

I add about 6-10" of growth a year up to approximately 6ft.
  • Environment:

I need bright indirect sun. Direct sunlight will burn my leaves.
  • Flowers:

My bigger relations, in the tree form, will flower but I am loved for my vibrant foliage.
  • Grooming:

I will only need repotting every 2-3 years as I like a tight container. It is normal for some of the fronds to brown or turn dry occassionally, just pull these out at the root.
  • Life Span:

My lifespan is about 10 years, maybe more if I am very happy.
  • Feeding:

My soil needs to be kept moist during Spring and Summer, but never sitting in water. Let the soil dry slightly between watering in the winter.
  • Fact:

I filter xylene and toluene from the air. And once I reach 1.8 m in height, I will transpire 1 liter of water per day, making me an effective humidifier.
