House Plant

Calathea Surprise Star (aka Calathea roseopicta 'Surprise Star')

  • Location:

I originate in the the jungles of the Amazon region in South America, where I live in the shade beneath dense vegetation.
  • Looks:

I have large beautiful dark purple leaves with bright pink banding.
  • Height:

In the right situation i can grow to 3ft high and 3ft wide.
  • Environment:

I am pretty versatile and like a bright spot, out of direct sunlight, or a shadier area. Keep me moist but not sitting in water. I like humidity.
  • Flowers:

I do produce strange alien flowers underneath my leaves but really it is my foliage that is the main attraction.
  • Grooming:

Just prune off any dead leaves or flowers. Ideally pull the whole leaf upwards out of its sheath on the stalk.
  • Life Span:

I can give you years of colour and beauty.
  • Feeding:

I can suffer from fluorotoxicity, ideally use softer water for me.
  • Fact:

Brown tips on my leaves are fairly common. If you trim these off the leaf will continue to grow.
