House Plant

Croton (aka Codiaeum variegatum 'Nervia' )

  • Location:

I am native to India and Malaysia.
  • Looks:

I have lush shiny and rubbery leaves that look like they have been spashed with red and yellow paint.
  • Height:

I have been known to grow to 10ft high, but I will probably not exceed about 3ft in your home. I can get bushy as my leaves add lots of volume.
  • Environment:

I like really bright indirect light, and preferably 4-5 hours of sunlight each day, otherwise my colours will fade. Please bear in mind I come from a tropical environment so don't let me get cold.
  • Flowers:

If you are very lucky I might produce berry like flowers on a stalk, from which daisy shaped flowers extrude.
  • Grooming:

You will need to clean my leaves often so that my colours can be appreciated.
  • Life Span:

I will live a long time in a good spot.
  • Feeding:

I like a warm, humid environment. Especially in Spring and Summer keep me moist but not sitting in water. You can mist me often.
  • Fact:

The oil of the Croton which was once used in herbal medicine as a violent purgative, is extracted from its seeds.
