Perennial

Mossy Saxifrage (aka Saxifraga 'pixie rose')

  • Location:

My genus is usually found in Arctic-alpine ecosystems. I am rarely found outside of temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Looks:

I form a compact mound of green mossy like leaves with delicate flowers sitting above it on naked stalks.
  • Height:

I grow low to the ground reaching only about 20cm.
  • Environment:

i prefer partial shade and am great for ground cover and work well in a rock garden.
  • Flowers:

I have small 5 petal flowers that appear in early spring.
  • Grooming:

Cut back my flowers once they have faded to tidy me up.
  • Life Span:

I am evergreen, my flowers will return each Spring.
  • Feeding:

I like to be kept moist. A top dressing of sand after I flower will keep me from getting root rot.
  • Fact:

My latin name 'saxifrage' literally means 'stone-breaker' this is thought to allude to a medicinal use for kidney stones.
