House Plant

Prayer Plant (aka Maranta Leuconeura)

  • Location:

I am native to tropical Central and South America and the West Indies.
  • Looks:

I'm beautiful, though I say so myself. I have lush light green leaves, with a lighter central spine from which curve pink ribs. My underside is a darker red.
  • Height:

Height and spread up to 3 feet in the right conditions.
  • Environment:

I like bright but indirect sunlight. I prefer a well draining soil and like humid conditions. Keep my soil moist but not soggy.
  • Flowers:

My flowers are tiny with three petals and two larger petal-like staminodes, these are stamens that don't produce pollen.
  • Grooming:

Clip my stems right above a leaf node. I will respond by sending out new shoots directly below the cut area, making for a bushier appearance!
  • Life Span:

If I am happy I will survive, some call me hardy and others have issues. You can propagate me easily.
  • Feeding:

Feed me about once a month with a diluted all-purpose fertiliser and you will see how I flourish.
  • Fact:

I get my name from the habit of folding my leaves up at night like hands during prayer. I am safe for humans and pets.
